RC
ROVER ® REV9-18 UNMANNED GROUND
SYSTEM A
Historical First in Affordability, Expandability,
and Durability!
So
many barriers to break - so little time! A
lot has changed since 2002 and the launch of
Rover-X, our heavy weight line of intelligent
robots. Embedded systems, wireless communications,
and robotics technology have evolved substantially,
offering capabilities previously only available to
and accessible by government and military
organizations. Furthermore, technology costs have
resolved and to such extend these days that one can
purchase a new laptop for around $600 USD or an
industrial grade rugged-PC for under $5000 USD.
Despite all technological advents and cost
reductions you might have heard or seen some of the
very expensive unmanned ground vehicles / systems
(UGV / UGVS) deployed all around the world for
military and law enforcement usage. Interestingly
enough each machine costs upward of $125,000 per
operable UGV and no less than $45,000 per
man-portable UGV ( robot arm not included ).
Other competing systems in the tactical service
class are too heavy for man-portability and are
even more costly than their very expensive little
cousins. Add to that the weight and cost of payload
and you get 150 LBS to 600 LBS machines costing
upwards of $130,000.
Commercial companies purchasing none military UGV /
robots for service use, find quickly that obtaining
one seems even more difficult than affording one.
For this reason most unmanned ground vehicles and
robots used for nonmilitary purpose today are
custom built from ground up. This means the buyer
pays all conceptual design work, trial, legal,
engineering, logistical, prototyping, and
manufacturing costs.
For the few who can find or build or afford such
systems, further barriers and questionable issues
lie ahead such as concerns regarding product
support and service, upgradeability, system
expandability, durability, and so on.
So
you ask, what does all this mean?
We've
been busy breaking
barriers!
The
RC Rover ® changes everything with the
introduction of REV9 Ready For Operation,
expandable, durable, and man portable series of
affordable UGV Systems! Furthermore, for the first

Need a non-man-portable larger UGV all together? No
problem give us a call. Rest assured after years of
producing robots / UGV Systems of various shape and
size, we Can help.
Six
years and Nine revisions later we have identified
the Ultimate footprint!
The
REV9, comprises of a number of important break
throughs in addition to affordability,
expandability, and durability. REV9 is the lightest
UGV in its class with the ultimate footprint for
man portability and payload-ability. Anything
smaller would be too small for reliable tactical
use and professional payload integration - anything
larger and heavier would not be man portable.
Intelligence!
All
REV9 RFO Systems ship with switchable RC / PC
controllers. This feature accommodates native
system expansion and integration for controlled and
autonomous PC based command center applications.
REV9-16 RFO System includes an onboard UMPC which
may be fully customized by us or the customer as
needed to support various payload and intelligent
software. A variety of onboard sensory devices and
off the shelf software solutions maybe purchased
for UMPC integration allowing simple onboard,
payload,or site / environmental data collection and
tasks. Please contact us to discuss your customized
system software and ASP solution.
Precision
and Speed
REV9
can "turn on a dime" while moving at speeds of few
inches per minute or up to 7 miles per hour. To top
that, the REV9 can be upgraded to reach speeds in
excess of 30+ MPH, making it the fastest UGV in its
class - breaking yet another barrier!
Payload
Capacity
At only 18" x 12" x 4" (REV9-18)
and 16" x 12" x 4" (REV9-16)
, each system is tested with 200 LBS of payload
before leaving factory. Simply put, weight is not
an issue - no matter what useable payload is fitted
onto the REV9. Internal and surface-mount payload
space combined, one REV9 alone can support a
payload including extended 28" robot arm (shoulder
/ arm config ), one 3D stereo cam, 2 x pan / tilts
IR cams, 100ft fiber reel, one onboard UMPC, 4
proximity / range sensors, global positioning box,
locator headlight, mic, backup power unit, and
disrupter module ( in place of gripper ), and three
high gain antennas. That's the payload capacity of
one REV9-18. Eliminate disrupter and backup power
unit from the list and you have a fully loaded
REV9-16. Wow!
Strength
& Durability
While not recommended, the REV9-18 can tow a small
car in neutral and on paved flat surface. For all
applied purposes REV9 RFO Systems are built to
resist momentary shocks, impacts, snow / rain,
external voltage spikes, solvents, fire, hazmat,
and harsh environments. This said, we recommend
keeping your REV9 away from such conditions as
often as possible to best protect your
investment.
Operator-Friendly
Both our REV9-18
RFO
and REV9-16
RFO
Systems are delivered Ready To Run (RTR) / Ready
For Operation (RFO) out of the box. Both RFO units
are programmed and shipped in RC mode so that
almost anyone able to move a joystick can operate
them. After just a few practice runs REV9 operators
are usually able to navigate with ease, operate
payload with reasonable precision, and push the
boundaries beyond our technical specifications. For
example, an expert operator can climb and descend
7" stairs with the REV9-18 while our technical
specs limit this to 4". Customized REV9 UGV Systems
shipped in PC to PC operation mode require a bit of
application familiarity. PC-inclined operators will
have no problem at booting and operating the
system. Others may be trained offsite or onsite at
a nominal fee.
Production
Tolerance &
Accuracy
All CNC aerospace material is machined at 0.0001"
tolerance. REV9 chassis is laser cut, pressed, and
welded T5 also available in painted or anodized T5
/ T6 or Titanium. Each chassis is tapped after
production so that component placement and
alignment maybe finalized depending on system
configuration before assembly is completed.
Internal and surface hardware is CNC machined or
machined by hand as needed.
Two
Step Maintenance - with the "hose down your UGV"
option?
Step 1: Clean machine after each use. Step 2: Keep
batteries charged at all time. That's it. For REV9
systems customized with permanent sealers, simply
hose down the UGV after each use and wipe dry. Otherwise use a wet/dry towel to clean chassis and payload. eXPANDHU®, wheels, tires, and tracks may be hosed and dried after each use. Surface mounted payload is subject to additional customization / protection before being hosed.
Repair
and Replacement
All REV9 Parts are replaceable. While replacement
may be performed by most savvy operators, it is
recommended to send in the unit so that the machine
can be examined throughout and firmware upgraded
for free. Tire and track repairs maybe made by a
local lawn and garden specialist. Track repair
adhesive is also available for field repairs. All
electronics and drive system components must be
repaired or replaced by an authorized REV9
technician. Should you damage your REV9, payload,
and components at any time, simply ship the machine
to us (insured) and we'll have it repaired, parts
replaced, and delivered to your door step within 10
days.
REV9
applications
Tactical
and law enforcement, surveillance and security,
search and rescue, geological and structural site
study and survey, facility monitoring, hazmat and
contaminated surface inspection, government and
academic UGV / robotics project developments,
scientific research, facility automation, personal
assistant, and more.
Which
to choose, REV9-16 RFO or REV9-18 RFO ?
That
mainly depends on your system, payload, and
application needs. The REV9-18 has a longer 18"
chassis, rendering more surface-mount space for
payload. It handles steep inclinations and stairs
with outstanding traction and accuracy. The REV9-16
has a shorter 16" chassis and higher ground and
payload clearance (2-4" depending on orientation)
therefore allowing it to operate upside down / down
side up with payload. Both machines come with Easy
Access panels which maybe permanently sealed as an
option to allow drive-through submerge under water
(Note: External payload also needs customization to
allow submergence). REV9-18 surface payload is
mounted on the Easy Access panel (on top of the
unit). REV9-16 payload is installed internally.
Additional surface-mount payload may be mounted on
either top or bottom side of the unit depending on
ground clearance requirements.
